Overview of the economy of Cornouaille
Population
In 1999, the Quimper district had 296,012 inhabitants in 82 communes.
The population density is 134 inhabitants/km² which is higher
than the average for Finistère (127 inhab./km²).
The population of Cornouaille has been steadily increasing since
the 1960s and between 1990 and 1999 it gained around 5,600 inhabitants.
However behind this positive growth hides a natural decline of
4,004 due to a fall in the birth rate and the large proportion
of elderly inhabitants. However, Cornouaille continues to attract
newcomers as it showed a net migratory increase of 9,600 individuals
between the last two censuses. The annual rate of variation in
the population due to migration is 0.36% as against 0.16% for
the 'departement' as a whole. Thus the attractiveness of Quimper
is undeniable.
In a region and 'departement' where the average age of the population
is higher than the national average, Cornouaille stands out by
being higher still. It has fewer young people, fewer adults and
more over 60s who represented 27% of the population of Cornouaille
in 1999.
The large number of young people leaving the area to study or
to seek employment coupled with the return of those active in
employment or retired is leading to an ageing population. Nevertheless
there are important geographic disparities within the Cornouaille
area ranging from areas of high demographic growth (Fouesnant,
the urban district of Quimper), sectors of moderate growth (Concarneau
and Quimperlé) and areas in decline (notably Cap Sizun,
Douarnenez, Haut Pays Bigouden and Scaër).
