Tourism in Cornouaille - Activities
The fishing ports of Cornouaille
The shipping forecast on national radio reads just like a Jacques
Prévert poem detailing the weather conditions from Fisher
to Iroise, the areas most frequented by the fishing fleets from
Douarnenez, Audierne, Saint-Guénolé-Penmarc'h, Le
Guilvinec, Lesconil, Loctudy and Concarneau. These are the major
fishing ports of Cornouaille which are interspersed along the
peninsula of west Finistère with smaller harbours for amateur
fishermen and yachtsmen.
These 7 ports with their 3,250 fishermen and 620 vessels account
for 25% of the fish landings in France, making Cornouaille one
of the main areas in Europe to be heavily dependent on the fishing
industry. The influence of fishing is present throughout the area
not least in the many restaurants offering fish and seafood.
The extensive coastline (whose length at low tide is equivalent
to 1 metre for each inhabitant) forms the backdrop for spectacular
sights like the return to harbour of the coastal fishing fleets
each evening.
